Summary
Jitterbug is a hand-dyed sock yarn that captivated me with its artistic color palette. The colorway Moss (featured here) is one of 43 available color combinations. The patterning is completely random, so there is no need to try to match the socks. It was truly the color combinations that first caught my eye, but it was the touch and feel of the yarn that pulled me in. It has a weightier feel than most sock yarns; its a 4ply fingering weight.
There is really no indication of how the color combinations will knit up, its like going on your very own knitting adventure or...."life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get".
One hank will knit up a very short sock (Colinette provides a pattern on the reverse side of the ball band), however, if you would like a longer length sock, I would recommend two hanks.
My Impressions
This yarn was extra soft and supple to the touch. The softness and the interesting colors make you feel like you could knit all day. The style, Moss, had no pattern nor did the colors spool around; it was purely random. The finished socks appear to be identical even though they are not. The pattern repeat kept the knitting interesting and I do believe may have added to the speed of my overall sock knitting. The wide range of artistic color combinations gives this yarn a universal appeal.
The Knitting Experience
US # 3 (3.25mm) was recommended. I like a tightly knitted sock so I chose to use US # 1 dpn's and was pleased with the result...however, I think for the next sock I would go up to a US# 2. The yarn was extra soft to the touch and pleasant to knit with....knit up effortlessly. No snagging, no twisting, and no knots.
The yarn comes in a hank and requires rewinding to a ball.
WashabilityMachine washable. Recommend Gentle cycle with cold water and line dry. I have found the socks to soften with washing. Size remained the same and the socks bounced back. Any of my own knitting flaws seemed to disappear.
If put into a Regular Wash and then into the dryer, they will felt.
WearabilityUsually when a sock yarn is 100% merino wool I always recommend adding nylon to the heel and toe to reinforce for longer wear.... However, since it has such a high/tight twist, I chose not use nylon and have not shown any thinning in this area after many wearings. After many many washings, they have shown slight signs of wear taking on a slightly fuzzy appearance.
Seem durable with very slight pilling. Very soft on the feet ... no scratchiness and non-irritatingto the bottom of the feet.
Holds elasticity over time and can be easily worn with shoes, even when knit with US# 1's.
