Yarn Review: Bo Peep's Not Just for Socks Yarn

  • Yarn name: Bo Peep's Not Just for Socks Yarn
  • Manufacturer: Farmhouse Yarns
  • Color: Caribean
  • Fiber Content: 75% Merino Wool, 25% Nylon
  • Yardage: 450 yards
  • Country of Origin: United States of America

    Summary
Beautiful Hand-dyed Yarn that is American made where each skein is unique. Dyelots really don't mean much here because there may extreme variations depending on the location of the skein in the dye pot. Luckily the generous yardage only requires one skein for a pair of socks. If multiple skeins are needed, one may want to alternate skeins to get some evenly distributed color.

    My Impressions
Initially this yarn is a litttle course and feels as if its been coated with something, that something is the lanolin coming thru this sturdy fiber.

The color combinations are beautiful, yet sometimes surprising, but blend nicely into one another.

    The Knitting Experience
I chose to use US # 2 dpn's even though the label recommends to use a US #1 needle. And almost wish I had used US #3's because of the sturdiness of the yarn, it produced a very sturdy sock. I really would classify mine as the perfect boot sock. I would classify this yarn more as a DK weight than a sock weight ans prescribed on the label.

The Yarn comes in a giant hank and makes a very generous pair of socks, I knit an 8" leg and an 10" foot and still had a lot of yarn leftover. Did not encounter any knots and was surprised to find no plant matter, due to the limited processing of this small farms produced wool. The dying technique produced short lengths of color and virtually no spiraling. I used this yarn in the Dash Sock Pattern.

    Washability
Machine wash gentle is recommended along with a cool tumble dry, low heat. I agree with the gentle wash but I would still line dry them. I think the dryer is rough on hand knit socks....I guess thats my own personal hang-up (no pun intended).

    Wearability
Surprisingly, I did not find them to be rough or scratchy on my feet. Of course, they are also not soft and cuddly like merino wool either. These will be very warm socks....let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

The wool/nylon blend means there that they will be durable for sock wear and will not need to be reinforced in the heel and toe area.
