Yarn Review: Plymouth Sockotta

  • Yarn name: Sockotta
  • Manufacturer: Plymouth
  • Fiber Content: 45% Cotton, 40% Superwash wool, 15% Polyamid Nylon
  • Yardage: 414 yards
  • Country of Origin: Italy

    Summary
Sockotta is offered in tonal solids as pictured, stripes and self-patterning in limited colorways. Even though the ball band does not include a picture, they are fairly identifiable, with the self-patterning yarn having short stop/starts of color distinguishing it from the others. The yardage is a little skimpy producing a shorter sock leg. A pair of socks can be made out of one skein.

    My Impressions
The 45% cotton gives this yarn an extra soft touch. It knit up quickly and effortlessly. If the self-pattern style (not shown)is chosen, characteristically seems to knit up faster due to the fair isle-like pattern keeps the knitting interesting.

    The Knitting Experience
I chose to use US # 1 dpn's vs. the recommended US #2's to make a slightly sturdier sock. The yarn was soft to the touch and pleasant to knit with.... it knitted up effortlessly. No snagging, no twisting, and no knots. The tonal solid is more of a random pattern with no obvious repeats.

The yarn can be pulled from either the center of the skein or the outside of the skein. Because of the no repeat (on the featured style pictured above) , its truly not necessary to match exactly, resulting in no yarn waste in matching.

    Washability
Machine washable. Recommend Gentle cycle with cold water and Line dry. I have found the socks to soften with washing. Size remained the same and the socks feel softer over time. Any of my own knitting flaws seemed to disappear thru washing. I love this yarn, just wish the yardage was more generous.

    Wearability
The cotton/wool/nylon blend makes it perfect for warmer climates or late spring thru early autumn.

The nylon assists in the longer wear and there is no need to reinforce either the heels or toes.

After many wearings, they have not shown any signs of wear. Seem durable with no pilling. Very soft on the feet ... no scratchiness and non-irritating to the bottom of the feet.
